The Repco Supercars Championship started the 2022 season Saturday night with Race 1 of the Beaurepaires Sydney SuperNight at Sydney Motorsports Park.
Anton De Pasquale of Dick Johnson Racing was on the pole with Shane Van Gisbergen of Red Bull Ampol Racing starting second.
De Pasquale led the opening eight laps before losing it to Andre Heimgartner. On lap 21, Van Gisbergen pitted while Heimgartner remained in the lead. Heimgartner fell to fifth place after pitting, and Van Gisbergen was the new leader on lap 30.
Van Gisbergen led 16 laps before pitting, handing the lead to De Pasquale. With 15 laps to go, De Pasquale went to pit road, and the lead went back to Van Gisbergen.
On lap 64, Van Gisbergen pitted, and the lead went to Will Brown with De Pasquale second while Van Gisbergen left pit road in third place.
Will Brown and Anton De Pasquale were fighting for the lead, allowing Van Gisbergen to close in on them. On lap 67, De Pasquale got the lead from Brown. However, Van Gisbergen closed in and passed both of them.
Shane Van Gisbergen led the last ten laps to win the race by 19.557 seconds over Anton De Pasquale. It was Van Gisbergen’s 55th career win in 450 starts.
The rest of the top ten finishers were Chaz Mostert third, Will Davison fourth, Brodie Kostecki fifth, Nick Percat sixth, Will Brown seventh, Tim Slade eighth, Broc Feeney ninth, and James Courtney tenth.
