Ocean City Nor’easters eliminated from U.S. Open Cup

On Wednesday night at Carey Stadium, the Ocean City Nor’easter opened the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament against the Lansdowne Yonkers FC.

In the eighth minute, a bouncing shot by Pablo Da Silva Marques put the Nor’easters up 1-0. Then four minutes later, Lansdowne Yonkers FC tied the game 1-1 in the twelfth minute by Shamir Mullings.

In the 28th minute, Jason Plumhoff had the ball for Ocean City and took a shot that missed wide of the mark. The game was tied 1-1 at halftime.

In the second half, conditions deteriorated as heavy rain moved in. In the 77th minute, Pablo Da Silva Marques nearly put Ocean City in the lead off a corner kick but missed.

  After 105 minutes, the game remained tied 1-1. Pablo Da Silva received a red card in extra time and was out of the game. The Nor’easter were down to ten players.

After extra time ended, the game was still tied 1-1, and the game went to a penalty kick shootout. Andrew Sousa, Joseph Devivo, Kyle Parish scored for Lansdowne. Meanwhile, Adam Sternberger, Nico Tramontana, and Kyle Galloway scored for Ocean City.

The Nor’easter missed two kicks. After Shamir Mullings scored, Leandro Tiago Louro da Silva needed a score to keep the game going but missed his shot upstairs, and the Lansdowne Yonkers FC won on penalty kicks 4-3. As a result, the Nor’easters are eliminated from the U.S. Open Cup.  

Ocean City had 11 shots, four shots on goal, six corner kicks, and goalkeeper Keasel Broome made five of six saves.

The Nor’easters now focus on the 2022 USL League Two season. The Nor’easters open the 2022 season on Saturday, May 21st, against Real Central New Jersey at 7 pm from Mercer County Community College Soccer Stadium.
