IronPigs lose a close game against Rochester

On Friday night, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (7-9) dropped their second straight game at Coca-Cola Park against the Rochester Red Wings (9-7).

On the mound for Lehigh Valley was James Marvel (0-2, 13.97 ERA), while Jackson Tetreault (0-1, 5.54 ERA) started for the Red Wings.

At the top of the first inning, the Red Wings struck first. With runners on first and second base, Red Wings’ designated hitter Josh Palacios singled on a soft line drive to right field, scoring a run that put Rochester up 1-0.

Moving ahead to the top of the second inning, the Red Wings extended their lead. With runners on first and second base, Red Wings’ catcher Chris Herrmann doubled on a line drive to left field, scoring two runs for a 3-0 Red Wings lead.

Then, IronPigs’ catcher Donny Sands attempted to pick off Herrmann trying to steal third base. However, he overthrew third baseman Will Toffey, and Herrmann scored, making it 4-0 Red Wings.

The Red Wings were looking to add another run. With a runner on second base, Rochester’s second baseman Luis Garcia lined out to right field as IronPigs’ second baseman Yairo Munoz made a leaping catch for the second out. The IronPigs got the third out to keep the game 4-0.

Moving ahead to the bottom of the third inning, the IronPigs finally got on the scoreboard. With a runner on first base, IronPigs’ catcher Donny Sands singled on a ground ball to center field, scoring a run. As Sands tried to push for second base, Red Wings catcher Chris Herrmann overthrew second baseman, Luis Garcia, allowing Sands to score, cutting the lead in half 4-2.

The IronPigs would get one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning. With a runner on third base, IronPigs’ left fielder Drew Maggi singled on a sharp ground ball to left field, scoring a run, making it a one-run game 4-3.

Unfortunately, the IronPigs were unable to complete the comeback. Moving ahead to the bottom of the ninth inning, Red Wings closer Alberto Baldonado got the last three outs, ending the game, and the Red Wings beat the IronPigs 4-3.

The win went to Red Wings relief pitcher Reed Garrett (1.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 SO), while the loss went to IronPigs starter James Marvel (4.0 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 1 SO).
