On Monday, the Edmonton Elks signed former TCU wide receiver J.D. Spielman, the son of former NFL player Rick Spielman. His uncle is former Ohio State All-American and NFL standout Chris Spielman.
The 24-year-old from Minneapolis, Minnesota, had eight catches for 125 yards, two touchdowns, and three carries for seven yards in four games in 2021 before suffering a season-ending injury.
J.D. Spielman played two seasons at TCU (2020-21) with 13 catches for 181 yards, two touchdowns, and seven carries for 35 yards. Spielman had nine kick returns for 302 yards and seven punt returns for 80 yards on special teams.
Before transferring to TCU, Spielman played three seasons at Nebraska (2017-19) with 170 catches for 2,546 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 21 carries for 128 yards in 33 games.
Spielman had 36 kick returns for 835 yards, one touchdown, and 20 punt returns for 216 yards and two touchdowns on special teams. In 2018, he was named Third-Team All-Big Ten and a two-time Nebraska Receiver of the Year.
Spielman holds several records, including Freshman All-Purpose Yards Record (1,572 in 2017), Freshman Receiving Yards Record (830 in 2017), and Freshman Receptions Record (55 in 2017).
