Edmonton Elks adds WR Charles Nelson, releases RB Martese Jackson

 On Tuesday, the Edmonton Elks made several moves ahead of their matchup against the Calgary Stampeders this Saturday at 7 pm on ESPN+.

First, the Elks signed former Blue Bombers wide receiver Charles Nelson, former Argonauts offensive lineman Martez Ivey, and defensive lineman Jacob Plamondon to the active roster.

Charles Nelson (26-years-old) played three years for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2018-19, 2021) with eight catches for 68 yards and one carry for six yards in 12 games. He had 56 punt returns for 503 yards and 30 kick returns for 606 yards.

The Daytona Beach, Florida, native played four seasons at Oregon (2014-17) with 124 catches for 1,555 yards, 14 touchdowns, 32 carries for 278 yards, and three touchdowns in 49 games. In addition, he had 99 kick returns for 2,424 yards, two touchdowns, 23 punt returns for 304 yards and two touchdowns. In 2014, he was named 2nd-Team Pac-12 Conference and 1st-Team Pac-12 All-Conference in 2015.

Martez Ivey is a 26-year-old from Apopka, Florida. He played college football at the University of Florida. He played in 49 games from 2015-18. In 2015, he was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team.

After college, he went undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft and signed with the New England Patriots but was cut during training camp. In 2020, he played eight games for the Tampa Bay Vipers of the XFL before the season was suspended. In 2021, he signed with the Carolina Panthers but was waived during training camp.

Jacob Plamondon (23-years-old) from Red Deer, Alberta, played four seasons at the University of Calgary (2017-19, 2021) with 39 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, six sacks, one pass breakup, and one forced fumble.

To make room for those players, the Elks released running back Martese Jackson, defensive lineman Claudell Louis, wide receiver Shai Ross and added defensive linemen Nick Coe, Ben Davis, and wide receiver Jalen Marshall to their practice roster.

Martese Jackson (30-years-old) played one game for the Elks with one carry for two yards. In addition, Jackson had three kick returns for 58 yards and three punt returns for 27 yards on special teams.

The Ashville, North Carolina, native played for Montreal with 16 punt returns for 132-yards and one kickoff return for 16-yards in three games.

After transferring from Fort Scott Community College, Jackson played three seasons at Florida Atlantic University. He played in 21 games for the Owls and had 71 carries for 278-yards, one touchdown, and five carries for 38-yards. After college, Jackson signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2016 but was released during training camp. He joined the Montreal Alouettes shortly after his release.

In 2017, Jackson signed with the Toronto Argonauts. He played 27 games in two seasons and had 23 carries for 103-yards, 23 catches for 174-yards, and one touchdown. In addition, he had two punt returns for touchdowns and one missed field goal returned for a touchdown on special teams. Jackson was part of the Argonauts 2017 Grey Cup championship team.

Martese Jackson was traded on September 10th, 2018, to the Edmonton Eskimos. He spent the rest of 2018 and 2019 with them. He played in twelve games with three carries for 25-yards, one touchdown, and eight catches for 67-yards.

Claudell Louis (31-years-old) played one game for the Elks. The Boynton Beach, Florida, native played two seasons with the BC Lions with 44 tackles, three sacks, and one forced fumble in 20 games.

In college, he played two seasons at the College of Sequoias (2011-12) with 22 tackles, 0.5 sacks, 3.5 tackles loss, and three pass breakups. Then, he transferred to Fresno State (2013-14) with 57 tackles, eight tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, one pass breakup, one fumble recovery, and one block on special teams.

Shai Ross (28-years-old) played two games for the Elks. The Winnipeg, Manitoba, native caught 27 passes for 369 yards and four touchdowns in 21 games for the Elks.

Nick Coe (24-years-old) was on the Saskatchewan Roughriders practice squad for two seasons. He attended training camp for the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots.

The Asheboro, North Carolina, native played four seasons at Auburn (2016-19) with 71 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, nine sacks, one pass breakup, and two forced fumbles.

Ben Davis (23-years-old) played 11 games for the Texas Longhorns in 2021 with 16 tackles, 4.5 tackles of loss, 2.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. The Gordo, Alabama, native played four seasons at Alabama (2017-20) with seven tackles, one sack, and one pass breakup in 24 games. He was part of the Crimson Tide’s 2017 and 2020 National Championship teams.

Jalin Marshall (26-years-old) played one game for the Elks with one catch for four yards. He spent two seasons in Hamilton (2019, 2021) with ten catches for 159 yards, one carry for eight yards, and one touchdown in eight games.

NAPA

Before heading to the CFL, the Middletown, Ohio, native played three seasons at Ohio State (2013-15) with 69 catches for 924 yards and 11 touchdowns in 27 games.

He signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent and played two seasons with 14 catches for 162 yards and two touchdowns in ten games. In 2019, he played for the Orlando Apollos (AAF) with 26 catches for 364 yards and three touchdowns.
