IronPigs shut out by Rochester Wednesday night

Lehigh Valley IronPigs

On Wednesday night at Coca-Cola Park, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs were shut out 4-0 against the Rochester Red Wings.

Kent Emanuel (0-0, 0.90 ERA) was on the mound for the IronPigs, while the Red Wings started Cade Cavalli (3-3, 5.07 ERA).

At the top of the second inning, IronPigs pitcher Kent Emanuel gave up a home run to Jake Noll that went over the wall at left field for a 1-0 lead. Then Emanuel walked Nick Barns before getting Donovan Casey to ground into a double play for two outs. After giving up a single to Adrian Sanchez, Emanuel got Matt Lipka to fly out that retired the side.

At the top of the third inning, IronPigs pitcher Kent Emanuel got Josh Palacios to ground out, followed by a pop-out from Ildemaro Vargas. Then, Emanuel gave up back-to-back singles to Joe Meneses and Riley Adams. Red Wings’ second baseman Jake Noll was next, and he doubled on a sharp line drive to center field, scoring two runs that extended Rochester’s lead, 3-0. Finally, Emanuel got Nick Banks to fly out for the final out of the inning.

Moving ahead to the top of the sixth inning, Kent Emanuel struck out Nick Banks and got Donovan Casey to fly out for two outs. That was it for him, and Ryan Sherriff replaced him. Emanuel went 5.2 innings, allowing eight hits, three runs, one walk, and five strikeouts. Sherriff stuck out Adrian Sanchez, that retired the side.

Red Wings’ starter Cade Cavalli had a no-hitter going for him. He retired 17 straight IronPigs batters until left fielder Chris Sharpe doubled to left field with two outs. Lehigh Valley could not bring Sharpe home after Dalton Guthrie flied out to end the inning. The IronPigs batters had five hits in this game.

At the top of the seventh inning, Ryan Sherriff hit Matt Lipka, then gave up a single to Josh Palacios. Red Wings’ shortstop Ildemaro Vargas was next to bat, and he laid down a bunt that moved the runners while he was out at first base. Then, Joey Meneses singled that went off both Sherriff and Scott Kingery’s gloves, all while another run scored for Rochester, 4-0. Sherriff struck out Riley Adams and got Jake Noll to ground out that retired the side.

At the top of the eighth inning, Jakob Hernandez replaced Ryan Sherriff. Sherriff went 1.1 innings, allowing two hits, one run, no walks, and two strikeouts. Hernandez got Nick Banks to fly out, followed by back-to-back strikeouts on Donovan Casey and Adrian Sanchez. Jakob Hernandez is now on a 13-game consecutive scoreless streak. Nothing against Hernandez, but he didn’t need to be out there when the IronPigs offense was dead.

Moving ahead to the bottom of the ninth inning, Alberto Baldonado closed out the game for Rochester. With two outs and runners on first and second base, Baldonado struck out IronPigs’ first baseman Josh Ockimey swinging, ending the game, and the IronPigs lost 4-0.

The loss drops the IronPigs to 43-37 on the season, and the Red Wings improved to 42-38. IronPigs pitcher Kent Emanuel lost his first game of the season, while the win went to Cade Cavalli (7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 SO).

The series continues tonight at 7:05 pm. Tickets for the game can be purchased at StubHub, and pick up IronPigs merchandise today at Fanatics.com.
