On Sunday, the Edmonton Elks signed former Hamilton Tiger-Cats running back Maleek Irons to the active roster. In addition, they signed former New Jersey Generals quarterback Ben Holmes to the practice squad.

The 26-year-old from Calgary, Alberta, was released by Hamilton last week. Irons played two games this year with one carry for three yards.

Irons play 24 games for the Ticats with 74 carries for 324 yards, one touchdown, and 18 catches for 116 yards. He also returned one kickoff for 12 yards. The Tiger-Cats drafted Irons in the third round (22nd pick) in the 2019 CFL Draft.

Maleek Irons played five seasons at Ohio (2014-18) with 254 carries for 1,468 yards, 17 touchdowns, 23 carries for 170 yards, and one touchdown in 29 games.

Ben Holmes (27-years-old) joins the Elks practice squad after being drafted in the first round by the New Jersey Generals (USFL). Unfortunately, Homes broke his right foot before the season began and was released.

The Orchard Park, New York, played for the Arizona Rattlers (IFL) and the Sea Lions (TSL). Holmes played two seasons at Nassau Community College and threw nearly 3,000 yards and 29 touchdowns in 18 career games. He was named Junior College All-American.

Then, Holmes transferred to Tarleton State (2018-19) for two seasons, going 361/616 for 5,997 yards, 62 touchdowns, nine interceptions, and 121 carries for 560 yards and three touchdowns in 25 games. He was named All-LSC Second Team.

To make room for these players, the Elks released defensive back Jalen Collins from the active roster, offensive lineman D’Antne Demery, and running back Jordan Scarlett from the practice squad.
