On Monday, Calgary Stampeders head coach Dave Dickerson announced on his weekly show with CHQR’s Mark Stephen that cornerback Tre Robinson is out for the rest of the 2022 season with a knee injury. Robinson injured the knee in Week 8 against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and had undergone season-ending surgery.
Before the knee injury, Robinson played five games with 17 tackles, one interception, and one forced fumble. Robinson is in his fourth season in Calgary with 121 tackles, 11 interceptions, two touchdowns, and four forced fumbles in 40 games. In addition, Robinson helped Calgary win the 2018 Grey Cup with 54 tackles, three interceptions, and two forced fumbles. In 2019, he was named CFL West All-Star and CFL All-Star.
The 29-year-old from Indianapolis, Indiana, was a quarterback in college, playing his first three seasons at Indiana University (2011-13) with 197/330 completions for 2,433 yards, 20 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, 206 carries for 982 yards, and ten touchdowns in 23 games.
Then, Robinson transferred to Illinois State (2014-15) with 327/602 completions for 5,446 yards, 48 touchdowns, 19 interceptions, 294 carries for 1,806 yards, and 22 touchdowns in 28 games.
Robinson signed with the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2016 and converted into a cornerback. He spent two years on the Vikings practice squad. After a successful 2018 season, the Stampeders released him to pursue an opportunity in the NFL and signed the largest CFL to NFL deal with the Chicago Bears for four years, worth $4.9 million.
However, he broke his foot and was placed on the non-football injury list. Robinson was released by the Bears on August 31st, 2021, and returned to Calgary two months later.
