On Wednesday, the Saskatchewan Roughriders released running back Shaq Cooper and defensive back Malcom Lee. The 29-year-old from Coral Gables, Florida, played one game for the Roughriders back on July 29th against the BC Lions.
He attended Saskatchewan’s training camp earlier this year. Cooper had five carries for eight yards, one catch for seven yards, and three kick returns for 77 yards in both preseason games.
Before the Lions and Blue Bombers, Cooper played two seasons (2018-19) for the Edmonton Elks (then known as the Eskimos) with 90 carries for 496-yards, two touchdowns, 21 catches for 156-yards, and one touchdown in seven games.
Cooper played three seasons at Fort Hayes State (2012, 2015-16) with 456 carries for 2,768 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 73 catches for 736-yards and ten touchdowns.
In 2015, Cooper was named the D2CCA All-Super Region 3 First Team, Don Hansen All-Super Region 3 Second Team, All-MIAA First Team, and Don Hansen All-America Honorable Mention.
Malcom Lee is a 25-year-old from Surrey, British Columbia, played five games for Saskatchewan with two tackles on special teams. Lee played for the Calgary Stampeders last season with three tackles on special teams in seven games.
Lee played four seasons at the University of British Columbia (2015-18). He began as a wide receiver with nine catches for 123 yards and one touchdown in 12 games. In addition, Lee had seven kick returns for 66 yards. Then, Lee switched to defensive back with 95 tackles, two sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, 21 pass breakups, and seven interceptions in 30 games.
