Edmonton Elks sign three players, including defensive back Ethan Makonzo

On Monday, the Edmonton Elks signed former Massachusetts Pirates defensive end Malik Harris and linebacker Tony Jones. In addition, the Elks brought back defensive back Ethan Makonzo.

Ethan Makonzo, a 26-years-old from Montreal, Quebec, returns to Edmonton after being released last month. He played four games for the Elks with one tackle on special teams this year. He is the older brother of Ethan Makonzo. The Montreal Alouettes drafted Ethan in the sixth round (46th pick) in the 2021 CFL Draft from the University of Montreal.

Malik Harris, a 26-year-old from Omaha, Nebraska, spent the 2022 season with the Houston Gamblers (USFL) with one tackle and the Massachusetts Pirates (IFL) with 15 tackles, three sacks, and one pass breakup.

Collegiately, Harris played one season at Pima Community College (2016) in Arizona as a tight end with two catches for 60 yards in seven games. Then, he transferred to Incarnate Word (2017-18) with 13 catches for 136 yards and three touchdowns. In his senior year, he switched to defensive end, making 34 tackles and three sacks in 22 games.

Tony Jones, a 27-year-old from Casselberry, Florida, was on the Toronto Argonauts practice squad this year. In 2021, Jones played for the Iowa Barnstormers (IFL) with 71 tackles, 3.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries in ten games and was named the IFL Rookie of the Year.

Collegiately, Jones played two seasons at Butler Community College with 107 tackles, 12.5 sacks, seven forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries, six pass breakups, and one interception in 22 games. Then, he transferred to Texas Tech (2017-18) with 77 tackles, eight sacks, one interception, three pass breakups, and three fumble recoveries in 24 games.
