On Tuesday, the Calgary Stampeders re-signed quarterback Jake Maier to a two-year contract extension. The 25-year-old from Fullerton, California, took over the starting job in Week 12 and is 136/178 completions for 1,653 yards, nine touchdowns, two interceptions, and six carries for 39 yards in 14 games this year.

“I thank the Stampeders for the opportunity to continue my career in Calgary,” said Maier. “Amanda and I love being here, and we look forward to creating more memories with our great fans. I am very excited for the future of this franchise and promise to do everything we can to deliver more championships to this great city.”

Last year, Jake Maier took over the starting job after Bo Levi Mitchell was injured in Week 2. Maier played eleven games with 95 completions for 1,211 yards, five touchdowns, three interceptions, and 16 carries for 31-yards and two touchdowns.

In two seasons with the Stampeders, Maier is 231/326 for 2,864 yards, 14 touchdowns, five interceptions, 22 carries for 70 yards, and two touchdowns in 25 games.

“Jake’s play has been very consistent and, for a young quarterback, he’s been very efficient,” said Stampeders president and general manager John Hufnagel. “Like any young player, he still has room for more improvement, but we believe he has a very bright future. It was important for the organization to get this extension done before the end of the season, and we’re pleased that Jake has made this commitment to the team.”

Collegiately, Maier played one season at Long Beach City College (2016) with 268 completions for 3,689 yards, 38 touchdowns, eight interceptions, and 68 carries for 116-yards and two touchdowns in 11 games.

Then, Maier transferred to UC Davis (2017-19), with 992/1,495 completions for 11,163 yards, 88 touchdowns, 33 interceptions, and 108 carries for -120 yards, and four touchdowns in 36 games, earning him the conference’s offensive player of the year and first-team quarterback.

As for Bo Levi Mitchell, the team plans to speak to Mitchell once the 2022 season ends. Mitchell recently past CFL Hall of Famer Henry Burris to become Calgary’s all-time passing yardage leader. Mitchell was 160/261 for 2,010 yards, nine touchdowns, and seven carries for 26 yards in 14 games for the Stampeders this year.

“In regards to Bo Levi Mitchell, we plan to speak to him at the conclusion of the season, and we’re keeping all options open. Bo has been a tremendous player for the Stampeders for a long time, and he has continued to be a great teammate and a great leader.”
