On Thursday, the Edmonton Elks signed former Montreal Alouettes offensive lineman Samuel Thomassin. The 27-year-old from Quebec spent most of the 2022 season on the Alouettes practice squad before being released on August 29th.
Montreal drafted Thomassin in the second round (19th pick) in the 2019 CFL Draft out of Laval. Thomassin played two games last season. Collegiately, Thomassin played at the University of Laval, where he is a three-time First-Team All-Canadian honors.
The Elks also placed running back Maleek Irons on the retired list. The 26-year-old from Calgary, Alberta, had 18 carries for 70 yards, one touchdown, and two catches for 31 yards in five games in Edmonton. At the beginning of the 2022 season, Irons played two games for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, with one carry for three yards.
Irons play 24 games for the Ticats with 74 carries for 324 yards, one touchdown, and 18 catches for 116 yards. He also returned one kickoff for 12 yards. The Tiger-Cats drafted Irons in the third round (22nd pick) in the 2019 CFL Draft.
Maleek Irons played five seasons at Ohio (2014-18) with 254 carries for 1,468 yards, 17 touchdowns, 23 carries for 170 yards, and one touchdown in 29 games.
