Remembering the greatest hockey commentator Jim Carr

Andrew Duncan as Jim Carr in Slap Shot

On Monday, Jim Carr (played by Andrew Duncan) of the legendary Charlestown Chiefs of the Federal League as a broadcaster, has passed away. His age and cause of death were not revealed.

Carr was part of the glory days of hockey, watching a struggling team from Charlestown, Pennsylvania, go from being a bad hockey team led to head coach/player Reggie Dunlop to winning the championship in its final year of existence that is still talked about to this day.

Carr interviewed players from the Chiefs, including Reggie Dunlop, Ned Braden, and this famous one with goalie Denis Lemieux explaining the rules of hockey.

He witnessed the birth of the legendary Hanson Brothers, who brought their toy cars with them every game, and when they made their debut after Dave “Killer” Carlson was injured in a fight. They went to work and beat up a bunch of players from the Broom County Blades. In today’s hockey, they would’ve spent more time in the penalty box than on the ice.

During the championship game against the Syracuse Bulldogs, Carr witnessed the Bulldogs assemble a team of killers, including Tim “Dr. Hook” McCracken, Ross “Mad Dog” Madison, and Ogie Ogilthorpe.

In the game, Carr witnessed Ned Braden, with who the two had issues, and Braden told the world about Carr’s wig, stripping butt naked in front of a sellout crowd. When Tim “Dr. Hook” McCracken punched the referee, the ref called the game, and the Chiefs won the championship of the Federal League.

Thanks for the memories Andrew Duncan for being part of a classic film that we will forever hold dear to our hearts.
