On Wednesday, the Philadelphia Stars announced that running back Matt Colburn II is returning for his second season with the Stars for the 2023 season. In addition, the Stars signed quarterback Kevin Thomson.
Matt Colburn II, a 25-year-old from Irmo, South Carolina, was drafted by the Stars in the 28th round (223rd pick) in the 2022 USFL Draft. Colburn played ten games with 102 carries for 457 yards and eight touchdowns. In addition, Colburn returned three punts for 53 yards.
In the North Division semifinals, Colburn had seven carries for 29 yards against New Jersey before injuring his knee and missed the rest of the playoffs.
Matt Colburn II played for the Blues in 2020 of the TSL. He also had a brief stint with the Toronto Argonauts. In 2019, Colburn tried out for the Los Angeles Rams.
Colburn played 47 games in four seasons (2015-18) at Wake Forrest with 542 carries for 2,550 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 34 catches for 306-yards.
Kevin Thomson, a 27-year-old from Auburn, Washington, appeared in one game for the BC Lions on August 26th, against the Saskatchewan Roughriders before being released on September 8th. He has appeared in three games for the BC Lions in two seasons.
Thomson started his collegiate career at UNLV (2014-15), appearing in two games before transferring to Sacramento State (2017-19) with 441/770 completions for 6,424 yards, 52 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, 672 carries for 832 yards, and 21 touchdowns in 27 games. After Sacramento State, he transferred to Washington but did not play a game.
