On Thursday, the Calgary Stampeders and veteran kicker Rene Paredes agreed to a one-year contract extension through the 2023 season.
The 37-year-old from Caracas, Venezuela, made 54 of 60 field goals, and 47 of 49 converted attempts made. He kicked 30 consecutive field goals spanning the 2021 and 2022 seasons, which was tied for the fourth-longest streak in the CFL. This will be Paredes’s 12th season in Calgary.
“I’m truly honored and humbled to come back for my 12th season in the Red and White,” said Paredes. “I can’t wait to get back on the field next year and compete for a championship.”
In 11 seasons in Calgary, Paredes made 494 of 564 field goals (87.6%), and 426 of 451 converted attempts. He’s been a team captain for eight years, and is on a streak of 193 consecutive regular-season games played, which ranks him 13th in CFL history.
In addition, he is a two-time Grey Cup champion (2014, 2018), a six-time CFL West All-Star (2012, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2021, 2022), a four-time CFL All-Star (2012, 2013, 2015, 2021), and a 2013 John Agro Special Teams Award.
“We’re pleased Rene has made the decision to continue his career and we welcome him back,” said Stampeders president and general manager John Hufnagel. “He is one of the greatest kickers in Canadian Football League history and his consistency and reliability since the beginning of his career have played an important role in our team’s success.”
Collegiately, Paredes played four seasons at Concordia (2007-10) making 54 of 71 field goals, and 73 of 76 converted attempts. After Concordia, he signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers but was released after training camp in 2011.
