Nick Aldis, a household name in the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), recently announced he will become a free agent after a falling out with NWA Owner Billy Corgan. The two have not gotten along in recent times when it came to creative decisions that led to Aldis handing in his notice. Aldis’s contract with the NWA ends at the end of the year.
Nick Aldis is an old-school wrestler, who could’ve gone to bigger companies. Instead, he chose the NWA and was a tremendous asset to the company. In the early years of the new NWA, Aldis was featured in the Ten Pounds of Gold Series. Aldis held in the NWA World Championship for 1,043 days before losing the belt to Trevor Murdoch at NWA’s 73rd Anniversary Show.
One of Aldis’s famous interviews was with the late great Harley Race. During the interview, you could tell that Aldis was digesting everything Race was saying to him about how wrestling should be. Aldis did a fantastic job with the interview shortly before Race passed away.
With Aldis now set to hit the free agent market, should he move forward and start a wrestling company? Aldis has options like the WWE, AEW, and New Japan, but Aldis wants to control his own schedule and who can blame him?
Aldis has a brilliant mind when it comes to wrestling. He is a historian and wants to honor those that came before him like Harley Race. I think he will go the route that Cody Rhodes did several years ago. When Rhodes left the WWE in 2016, he wrestled in the indies, along with Impact Wrestling before settling in with Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling. That is where he met The Elite (Matt and Nick Jackson, and Kenny Omega).
In 2018, Rhodes, along with the Young Bucks funded the biggest independent wrestling show called “All In.” It was a smash hit and became the first show to sell out in nearly 20 years outside of WWE. The show eventually led to the creation of All Elite Wrestling (AEW). In addition, Aldis wrestled Cody Rhodes on the show for the NWA title.
Aldis, along with his wife Mickie James, have plenty of connections in the wrestling business with top indie wrestlers and those who are about to become free agents themselves. If Aldis decided to start a wrestling company, there would plenty of talent to sign for a new promotion.
In order to get there, he is going to need to find someone who shares his vision about the wrestling business, and I don’t think he will have a problem finding partners. Furthermore, he is also going to need to find a television or streaming network that will air the show.
Next, he could bring in Matt Cardona to lead the merchandising department. Cardona has done a wonderful job since being released by the WWE in 2020.
His smash hit podcast known as “The Major Wrestling Figure Podcast” discusses wrestling action figures along with his friends Brian Myers and Mark Sterling. He has been able to create merchandise from toys, clothing, and more for the podcast, and bringing him in would be beneficial. In addition, Cardona could join Aldis in owning the company.
Therefore, Aldis should consider starting a wrestling company. If he gets a business partner and a good television or streaming deal, Aldis can continue the work of bringing old-school wrestling shows to new fans as well as old fans. The likes of Harley Race and other old-school wrestlers who’ve passed would be grinning from ear to ear knowing that the old-school wrestling method will not be going away anytime soon.
In an update, Nick Aldis, Mickie James, and Conrad Thompson are forming Oceania Pro Wrestling. You can read the article here.
