Garrett McFadden scores a goal for the Royals in a 5-3 loss to Maine

On Wednesday night at the Cross Insurance Arena, the Reading Royals (7-5-1) saw their six-game winning streak come to an end with a 5-3 loss to the Maine Mariners (6-7-1).

The Mariners took a 1-0 lead thirty-nine seconds into the first period on a goal by Tim Doherty (4) with an assist by Patrick Shea. Less than two minutes later, the Royals tied it up 1-1 on a goal by Garrett McFadden (1) with assists from Trey Bradley and Alec Butcher.

However, the Mariners scored two more goals in the first period by Mathew Santos (5) and Alex-Olivier Voyer (2) to take a 3-1 lead heading into the second period.

In the second period, the Royals cut the Mariners’ lead to 3-2 on a goal by Trey Bradley (4) with assists from Max Newton and Mason Millman. However, Maine got that goal back 4-2 at 18:58 by Mathew Santos (6) with assists from Nick Master and Nate Kallen. Less than a minute later, Trey Bradley (5) scored to make it 4-3 with an assist from Max Newton.

In the third period, the Mariners put the game away with a minute left on an empty net goal by Patrick Shea (5) to make it 5-3 with an assist from Conner Bleackley.

The Royals finished the night with 31 shots, 1/5 on the power play, and Justin Kapelmaster made 29 saves. Maine finished the night with 34 shots, 1/4 on the power play, and Michael DiPietro made 28 saves.
