On Friday, the Montreal Alouettes and veteran defensive lineman Almondo Sewell agreed to a two-year contract extension through the 2024 season. The 35-year-old from Buff Bay, Jamaica, had 19 tackles and three sacks in the 2022 season. This will be his third season in Montreal, and 12th in the CFL.
Collegiately, Sewell played four seasons at Akron (2007-10) with 223 tackles, 5.5 sacks, one pass breakup, four forced fumbles, and two blocks on special teams in 48 games. He was named to the All-MAC Second Team in 2007, and a two-time All-MAC Third Team in 2008 and 2009.
Next, Sewell signed with the Edmonton Eskimos in 2011, playing three games with one tackle. In 2012, he played for the Cleveland Gladiators (AFL) with 18.5 tackles, three sacks, one fumble recovery, and two forced fumbles in 18 games.
In the same year, he returned to the Eskimos. Sewell played nine seasons in Edmonton (2011-19) with 284 tackles, 60 sacks, and two fumble recoveries in 139 games. In 2015, he helped the Eskimos win the Grey Cup over Ottawa Redblacks.
The Alouettes signed Sewell on February 9th, 2021. In two seasons, Sewell has 38 tackles and eight sacks in 30 games for Montreal.
