On Friday, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers released defensive backs Malcolm Thompson and Patrice Rene.
Malcolm Thompson, a 27-year-old from Windsor, Ontario, had 28 tackles in the ten games for Winnipeg in his second season in the CFL. In 2021, he played for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats with two tackles in two games.
Thompson played three seasons at Wilfrid Laurier (2016, 2018-19) with 81 tackles, two sacks, seven interceptions, two touchdowns, 16 pass breakups, and two fumble recoveries. Thompson helped Wilfrid win the 2016 Men’s Football OUA Champions. He is a two-time OUA Men’s Football Second Team All-Star, and an OUA Men’s Football First Team All-Star in 2016.
Patrice Rene, a 25-year-old from Ottawa, Ontario, played one game for the Blue Bombers in his first season in the CFL. Rene played five seasons at North Carolina (2016-20) with 103 tackles, two interceptions, 14 pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery in 45 games. Then, Rene transferred to Rutgers in 2021 with eight tackles in five games.
