The BC Lions and veteran kicker Sean Whyte agreed to a one-year contract extension on Thursday. The 37-year-old from White Rock, British Columbia, made 36 of 39 field goals for (92.3%). This will be Whyte’s 15th year in the CFL and fourth for the Lions.

“I couldn’t be more grateful to the Lions organization for allowing me the opportunity to continue playing with my hometown team,” said Whyte to BC Lions reporter Matt Baker. “We made huge strides with this exciting group of players in 2022 and I can’t wait to continue the chase for another Grey Cup ring.”

Whyte made his CFL debut in 2009 with the Lions after Paul McCallum was injured. He played two seasons with the Lions making 27 of 35 field goals (77.1%) and making 30 extra points in 13 games. In 2011, the Lions traded Whyte to the Montreal Alouettes.

Whyte played four seasons in Montreal, making 160 of 190 field goals (84.2%), and made 173 extra points in 72 games. Whyte was named CFL All-Star in 2013.

In 2015, Whyte signed with the Edmonton Eskimos (now Elks). He played six seasons in Edmonton making 195 of 205 field goals (95.1%) and making 166 extra points in 83 games. Whyte helped the Eskimos win the 2015 Grey Cup championship over the Ottawa Redblacks.

In 186 career games, Whyte has made 418 of 480 field goals (87.1%), 423 extra points made, and punted the ball 715 times for 25,384 yards. He sits 13th on the CFL’s all-time scoring list with 1,734 points, surpassing Noel Prefontaine.
