The Winnipeg Blue Bombers and two-time Grey Cup champion defensive back Winston Rose agreed to a one-year contract extension on Wednesday. The 29-year-old from Inglewood, California, had 66 tackles, three interceptions, one touchdown, and one forced fumble in 17 games during the 2022 season.
This will be Rose’s fourth year with the Blue Bombers and sixth year in the CFL. In three seasons with the Blue Bombers, Rose has 129 tackles, 12 interceptions, two touchdowns, and one forced fumble in 38 games.
Before the CFL, Rose signed with the Los Angeles Rams in 2016 as an undrafted free agent out of New Mexico State. Rose tried out for the Rams and Indianapolis Colts in 2016 before heading to the CFL with the Toronto Argonauts in 2016. He was on the Argonauts’ practice squad.
In 2017, Rose signed with the Ottawa Redblacks, playing four games with 21 tackles. In 2018, Rose signed with the BC Lions and played 18 games with 32 tackles, eight special teams tackles, and five interceptions.
Then in 2019, he joined the Blue Bombers and played a key role in helping them win their first Grey Cup championship in 29 years. Rose played 18 games with 58 tackles, nine interceptions, and one touchdown. He was named CFL West All-Star and CFL All-Star in 2019.
After the 2019 season, Rose went back to the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals on their practice squad before returning to the Blue Bombers in 2021. Rose played three games in 2021 with five tackles, helping the Blue Bombers win their second Grey Cup championship.
Collegiately, rose played three seasons at New Mexico State (2013-15) with 106 tackles, 13 pass blocks, five interceptions, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and one blocked kick in 26 games.
