The Winnipeg Blue Bombers and long snapper Mike Benson agreed to a two-year contract extension on Thursday that runs through the 2024 season. The 35-year-old from Winnipeg, Manitoba, played 18 games in 2022. This will be Benson’s third season in Winnipeg.

The eleven-year veteran was scheduled to become a free agent in February. He’s played in 121 CFL games. Benson played two seasons (2008-09) for the Winnipeg Riffles (CJFL) junior team before transferring to Acadia University (2010-11) with 18 tackles, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries in 15 games.

After Acadia, Benson signed with the Edmonton Eskimos (now Elks) playing three games in 2012. In 2013, he was on the Eskimos practice squad and later signed with the Toronto Argonauts in 2014 but was released.

Shortly after being released by the Argonauts, Benson signed with the BC Lions, playing nine games. He would go on to play five seasons in BC playing 81 games. In 2019, Benson signed with the Ottawa Redblacks playing five games.

Finally, in 2021, Benson signed with the Blue Bombers playing 14 games as the Blue Bombers won their second consecutive Grey Cup championship.
