Edmonton Elks mourn the passing of running back Christian Saulsberry

The Edmonton Elks are mourning the passing of running back/special teams returner Christian Saulsberry on Saturday. The team confirmed that Saulsberry passed away after being shot in Memphis, Tennessee. He was 25 years old.

The Elks released a statement on the passing of Saulsberry. “First and foremost, our hearts go out to his family during this incredibly difficult time. Our condolences are also extended to his friends, including the many teammates and coaches both here in Edmonton and elsewhere, that he impacted throughout his football career,”

“Christian’s contributions to our football team both on the field and in our locker room were significant during his one season with the green and gold. His positivity and energy for life will be dearly missed.”

Saulsberry signed with the Elks as a free agent and played one season with the Elks in 2022 with one carry for seven yards, one catch for 17 yards, 19 punt returns for 235 yards, 34 kick returns for 635 yards, and three missed field goal returns for 78 yards in eight games. The Elks named Saulsberry Most Outstanding Special Teams Player in 2022.

Collegiately, Saulsberry played two seasons (2016-17) at Itawamba Community College (Mississippi) with six carries for 12 yards, 55 catches for 658 yards, two touchdowns, 16 kick returns for 343 yards, and six punt returns for 22 yards in 18 games. He was named to the MACJC First-Team All-State in 2017.

Then, Saulsberry transferred to West Alabama (2018-19) with one carry for 26 yards, 86 catches for 1,224 yards, seven touchdowns, 52 kick returns for 1,452 yards, one touchdown, and two punt returns for five yards.
