The Ottawa Redblacks released linebackers Shaheed Salmon and Jordan Young on Tuesday.
Shaheed Salmon, a 26-year-old from Tampa, Florida, had 38 tackles, one interception, and two forced fumbles in 18 games for the Redblacks in 2022. Salmon played three seasons in Ottawa with 54 tackles, one interception, and four forced fumbles in 27 games.
Collegiately, Salmon played four seasons at Samford University (2014-17) with 275 tackles, 8.5 sacks, and four interceptions in 44 games, of which 27 were starts. In 2016, Salmon was named First-Team All-SoCon by the league’s coaches.
After college, Salmon signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent in 2018. In 2019, he played for the Birmingham Iron (AAF) with 17 tackles in eight games, of which three were starts.
Jordan Young, a 24-year-old from Coatesville, Pennsylvania, spent the 2022 season on the Redblacks practice squad. Collegiately, Young played five seasons at Old Dominion (2017-19, 2021) with 350 tackles, 4.5 sacks, two interceptions, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, and eight pass breakups in 49 games.
In his final year with the Monarchs, he had 104 tackles, which was seventh in Conference USA, and 57th in the country, along with two sacks, one interception, and one fumble recovery. His 350 tackles set a new ODU record, breaking the previous record of 340 tackles by Craig Wilkins. He was named Conference USA Honorable Mention.
In 2017, Young was named Conference USA All-Freshman Team with 85 tackles, 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and three pass breakups in 12 games. He was named Conference USA All-Freshman Team.
