The Winnipeg Blue Bombers signed former York University defensive back Jacob Janke on Wednesday. The 25-year-old from Edmonton, Alberta, attended the Saskatchewan Roughriders training camp in 2021.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders drafted Janke in the fourth round (35th pick) in the 2019 CFL Draft but returned to York University for his final season.
Collegiately, Janke started as a wide receiver before switching to defense. He played five seasons for the Lions (2015-19) with 104 tackles, one sack, four interceptions, one touchdown, ten pass breakups, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, 11 catches for 94 yards, two carries for 12 yards, 17 kick returns for 308 yards, and nine punt returns for 18 yards in 29 games.
In his final season, Janke had 34 tackles, one sack, three interceptions, one touchdown, six pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery in eight games. He earned U SPORTS second-team all-Canadian and OUA first-team all-star honors.
In addition, he earned the team’s Frank Cosentino Team MVP Award in 2019, and named the recipient of York’s Outstanding Male Graduate Award, and received a Lions Legacy Award.
