Calgary Stampeders defensive lineman Tom Schnitzler retires after two seasons

Calgary Stampeders defensive lineman Tom Schnitzler retired on Monday according to the CFL Transactions page. The 27-year-old from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, made one tackle on special teams for the Stampeders in 2022.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats drafted Schnitzler in the eighth round (72nd pick) in the 2020 CFL Draft. In 2021, he dressed in four games and made two tackles on special teams. On January 11th, 2022, Schnitzler signed with the Stampeders as a free agent.

Before the CFL, Schnitzler played five seasons for the Saskatoon Hilltops (CJFL) as a defensive lineman, tight end, and long snapper.

Schnitzler made 109.5 tackles, 29 tackles on special teams, 16 sacks, five forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, four interceptions, two touchdowns, two blocked kicks, and 88 pass breakups in 43 games. He was part of the Hilltops’ four national championship teams.

Then, Schnitzler played two seasons at the University of British Columbia (2018-19) with 45 tackles, three sacks, three pass breakups, and one forced fumble in 16 games for the Thunderbirds. In 2018, Schnitzler was named UBC Special Teams Player of the Year, and named UBC Defensive Lineman of the Year in 2019 after making 20 tackles in eight games.
