The Saskatchewan Roughriders and defensive lineman Anthony Lanier II agreed to a one-year contract extension through the 2023 season on Monday. The 29-year-old from Savannah, Georgia, made 19 tackles, eight sacks, and two forced fumbles in 11 games for the Roughriders in 2022. This will be Lanier’s third season in Saskatchewan.
The Roughriders signed Lanier as a free agent on March 2nd, 2021. In two seasons in Saskatchewan, Lanier has 32 tackles, nine sacks, and forced fumbles in 21 games.
Before joining Saskatchewan, Lanier played four seasons in the NFL with the Washington Redskins and Los Angeles Chargers. The Redskins signed Lanier as an undrafted free agent in 2016. He played four games with one fumble recovery.
He went on to play 15 games in Washington with 15.5 tackles, five sacks, six pass breakups, and two fumble recoveries. In addition, Lanier spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs and New Orleans Saints.
Collegiately, Lanier played four seasons at Alabama A&M (2012-15) with 150 tackles, seven sacks, eight pass breakups, three forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries in 41 games for the Bulldogs. In his senior season, Lanier made 29 tackles, 2.5 sacks, one pass breakup, and one forced fumble in eight games.
