Edmonton Elks offensive lineman Tony Washington announced his retirement on Monday via Twitter after a 12-year CFL career.
“12 years, 2 Grey Cups, and a hell of a ride!” said Washington. “This league has given me so much that I will hold to my heart forever, but after much talks with my family, it’s time to move on! To all of my coaches, I’ve had, the fans, friends, and family I’ve developed THANK YOU! it has been amazing!”
The 36-year-old from New Orleans, Louisiana, played nine games at right tackle. It was his second stint with Edmonton. He played 58 games for the Eskimos/Elks that included winning the 2015 Grey Cup championship.
In 2011, he came to the CFL after playing for the Dallas Vigilantes, signing with the Calgary Stampeders. He played five games for Calgary in 2011 before signing with the Toronto Argonauts in 2012. He played 21 games in two seasons in Toronto and was part of the 2012 Grey Cup championship team. Afterward, Washington was traded to the Edmonton Eskimos in 2014. He played 49 games for the Eskimos.
Then, Washington was released by Edmonton in 2017 and signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats a short time later. He played 17 games for the Ticats before he was traded to Montreal in 2018. He played 37 games in three seasons with the Alouettes. Then, the Elks re-acquired him in 2022.
Collegiately, Washington played at Trinity Valley Community College and Abilene Christian University (2008-09) playing 24 games at left tackle.
