Philadelphia Stars re-sign QB K.J. Costello and sign WR Corey Coleman

The Philadelphia Stars re-signed quarterback K.J. Costello and signed former Cleveland Browns wide receiver Corey Coleman on Friday.

K.J. Costello, a 25-year-old from Rancho Santa Margarita, California, attended the New Orleans Saints training camp in 2022. Costello signed with the Stars on May 27th after starter Bryan Scott went out with a knee injury against New Jersey in Week 3 and missed the season. Costello backed up Case Cookus for the rest of the season.

Costello played three regular season games with four of ten completions (40%) for 69 yards and five carries for -15 yards. After quarterback Case Cookus was injured with a fractured fibula, Costello played the rest of the USFL Championship game against Birmingham, completing five of nine passes (55.6%) for 65 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in a 33-30 loss.

Before joining the Stars, Costello tried out for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2021 and was released during training camp.

Costello played three seasons at Stanford (2017-19) with 495 of 791 completions for 6,151 yards, 49 touchdowns, 18 interceptions, 88 carries for 96 yards, and three touchdowns in 29 games. In 2018, he was named All-Pac-12 Second Team.

After Stanford, Costello transferred to Mississippi State (2020) for his senior year with 134 of 209 completions for 1,283 yards, six touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and 24 carries for -65 yards in six games.

In his first start for the Bulldogs against the defending champions LSU, Costello went 36-60 for 623 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions. His 623 yards broke the SEC record for passing yards in a single game.

Corey Colman, a 28-year-old from Dallas, Texas, spent most of the 2022 season on the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad. The Cleveland Browns drafted Coleman in the first round (15th pick) in the 2016 NFL Draft. He played two seasons in Cleveland with 56 catches for 718 yards, five touchdowns, and two carries for ten yards in 19 games.

After having stints with the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots. Coleman signed with the New York Giants. He played eight games with five catches for 71 yards, and one carry for five yards. A year later, Coleman tore his ACL and spent time on the Giants practice squad.

Collegiately, Coleman played three seasons at Baylor (2013-15) with 173 catches for 3,009 yards, 33 touchdowns, 33 carries for 164 yards, one touchdown, 25 kick returns for 651 yards, one touchdown, and three punt returns for nine yards in 35 games for the Bears.

Coleman won the 2015 Biletnikoff Award for the nation’s outstanding college football receiver and was a unanimous All-American in 2015.
