The Toronto Argonauts re-signed wide receiver Markeith Ambles to a one-year contract extension through the 2023 season on Tuesday. In addition, Toronto signed former Wyoming wide receiver Tanner Gentry and former Morehead State wide receiver BJ Byrd.
Markeith Ambles, a 31-year-old from McDonough, Georgia, had 72 catches for 109 yards, and five touchdowns in 18 games for Toronto in 2022. This will be his second season in Toronto. Toronto signed Ambles in 2016 before releasing him after training camp.
Then, he signed with the Calgary Stampeders in 2018. He played three seasons in Calgary with 117 catches for 1,399 yards, seven touchdowns, and three carries for 14 yards in 29 games.
Collegiately, Ambles started at USC before transferring to Arizona Western Community College in 2012. He played one season with 44 catches for 757 yards and six touchdowns.
Afterward, Ambles transferred to Houston (2013-14) with 49 catches for 791 yards, five touchdowns, two kick returns for 99 yards, and one punt return for one yard in 23 games for the Cougars.
Tanner Gentry, a 28-year-old from Aurora, Colorado, played three games for the Buffalo Bills in 2022. He spent two seasons in Buffalo on the practice squad before being promoted to the active roster. In 2017, he signed with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent. He played four games with three catches for 35 yards.
Collegiately, Gentry played four seasons at Wyoming (2013-16) with 180 catches for 2,815 yards, 20 touchdowns, 13 carries for 81 yards, and two kick returns for 15 yards in 45 games, of which 30 were starts. He was named Second-Team All-Conference in 2016.
B.J. Byrd, a 23-year-old from Richmond, California, was drafted by the Houston Roughnecks (XFL) in 2022. Collegiately, Byrd played one season at Jacksonville University in 2019 with 27 catches for 445 yards, one touchdown, six carries for 31 yards, one touchdown, 34 kick returns for 771 yards, and seven punt returns for 72 yards in 12 games for the Dolphins.
Then, Byrd transferred to Morehead State (2020-21) with 121 catches for 1,780 yards, 21 touchdowns, 13 kick returns for 360 yards, and one touchdown in 18 games for the Eagles. He is a two-time Unanimous All-PFL First-Team and PFL Offensive player of the year.
