The Toronto Argonauts and reigning Grey Cup MVP linebacker Henoc Muamba agreed to a one-year contract extension through the 2023 season on Tuesday.
The 33-year-old from Kinshasa, Zaire, played a key role in helping the Argonauts win the 109th Grey Cup with 76 tackles, three sacks, and two interceptions in 17 games. He was named Grey Cup MVP after making three tackles and one interception.
This will be Muamba’s third season in Toronto and eleventh in the CFL. In two seasons, Muamba has 127 tackles, five sacks, and three interceptions in 27 games.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers drafted Muamba as the number one overall pick in the 2011 CFL Draft out of St. Francis Xavier University. Muamba played three seasons in Winnipeg with 207 tackles, four sacks, one interception, one touchdown, and fix forced fumbles in 47 games before being released for an opportunity in the NFL.
Muamba signed with the Indianapolis Colts and played 13 games with 3.5 tackles. After the Colts, he went back to the CFL, signing with the Montreal Alouettes. He played one season in Montreal with 14 tackles and one interception in four games before returning to the NFL and signing with the Dallas Cowboys.
He was released on the final day of training camp. Muamba returned to the CFL for the third time as he signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He played two seasons in Saskatchewan with 120 tackles, two sacks, two interceptions, and five forced fumbles in 22 games.
Afterward, Muamba signed with the Montreal Alouettes for his second stint. He made 202 tackles, six sacks, one interception, and three forced fumbles in 35 games. In 2021, Muamba signed with Toronto as a free agent.
Collegiately, Muamba played four seasons at St. Francis Xavier University (2007-10) and graduated as the X-Men’s all-time leader in tackles (149.5). He won the President’s Trophy in 2010 as the Most Outstanding Defensive Player in USPORTS.
In addition, he is a two-time First Team All-Canadian (2009-10), and Second Team in 2008. AUS Defensive Player of the Year in 2008 and 2010.
