The Calgary Stampeders signed former Western Illinois defensive back Michael Lawson on Thursday. The 24-year-old from Hayward, California, attended rookie minicamps for the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints in 2022.
Collegiately, Lawson began at the City College of San Francisco for two seasons (2016-17) with 89 tackles, five interceptions, nine pass breakups, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and one blocked kick in 19 games for the Rams.
In 2019, Lawson transferred to Lamar University with 94 tackles, five interceptions, seven pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one blocked kick in 11 games for the Cardinals. He is a two-time First-Team All-Southland Conference selection as both a defensive back and punt returner.
Then, Lawson transferred to Western Illinois (2020-21) with 151 tackles, three sacks, six interceptions, one touchdown, 12 pass breakups, six forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, one punt return for 36 yards, and one touchdown in 17 games for the Fighting Leathernecks. He was named Second Team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference in 2021.
