Shane van Gisbergen’s late move propels him to victory at Newcastle

Shane van Gisbergen passes Chaz Mostert to win Race 2 at Newcastle

The Repco Supercars championship concluded the weekend on Sunday afternoon with Race 2 of the Thrifty Newcastle 500 at Newcastle Street Circuit in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

Penrite Racing driver David Reynolds started on the pole with Mobil 1 Optus Racing driver Chaz Mostert starting second. The race was suspended early when Declan Fraser crashed at the pit wall, dislodging it. Repairs took 20 minutes before the race resumed.

Chaz Mostert dominated the portion of the race. Hours after being stripped of his Race 1 victory, Red Bull Ampol Racing driver Shane van Gisbergen, who started fifth, put the bump and run on Chaz Mostert at Turn 9 on lap 85 and drove to his first win of the season by 4.4 seconds over Mostert. After the race, Mostert called the move “a little bit cheeky”.

The rest of the top ten finishers are David Reynolds third, James Golding fourth, Broc Feeney fifth, Brodie Kostecki sixth, Andre Heimgartner seventh, Jack Le Brocq eighth, Tim Slade ninth, and Mark Winterbottom tenth.

The Repco Supercars Championship heads to Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit in Melbourne, Victoria, in two weeks for the Beaurepaires Melbourne SuperSprint from March 30th through April 2nd. You can watch the Repco Supercars Championship on their official YouTube channel for $7.45 a month.
