Birmingham quarterback J'Mar Smith throws a touchdown in Saturday night against New Jersey

The Birmingham Stallions (1-0) began their quest to defend their USFL title on Saturday night at Protective Stadium against the New Jersey Generals (0-1) in a rematch from Week 1 last season.

Birmingham quarterback J’Mar Smith completed 10 of 15 passes (66.7%) for 160 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and two carries for one yard. Meanwhile, quarterback Alex McGough completed 7 of 11 passes (63.6%) for 68 yards, one touchdown, and led the Stallions rushing with six carries for 51 yards, and one touchdown.

Birmingham tight end Jace Sternberger led the receivers with five catches for 62 yards and one touchdown. Birmingham’s defense allowed 356 yards, with 67 tackles, two tackles for loss, two sacks, and three pass breakups.

New Jersey quarterback Dakota Prukop completed 13 of 17 passes (76.5%) for 148 yards, four carries for 12 yards, and one touchdown. Generals running back Darius Victor led the rushing with eight carries for 84 yards, and wide receiver Cam Echols-Luper led the receivers with five catches for 54 yards.

New Jersey’s defense allowed 310 yards, with 47 tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack, one interception, and two pass breakups.

Next week, the Birmingham Stallions host the Memphis Showboats on Saturday at 7 pm on FOX, while the Generals play the Pittsburgh Maulers next Sunday at 1 pm on NBC. Tickets for both games are available on StubHub and Viagogo.
