Montreal Alouettes make several moves including signing WR Hergy Mayala

The Montreal Alouettes signed wide receiver Hergy Mayala to a one-year contract extension on Thursday through the 2023 season. Hergy Mayala is six foot one and weighs 208 pounds.

The 27-year-old from Congo, but grew up in Montreal, Quebec, made 33 catches for 409 yards, and two touchdowns in 18 games for the Alouettes in 2022 before he was released. He signed with the New Orleans Breakers on February 15th, 2023, but was released at the end of training camp.

The Calgary Stampeders drafted Mayala in the first round (8th pick) of the 2019 CFL Draft. In his rookie season, Mayala caught 38 passes for 562 yards, and five touchdowns for the Stampeders. In 2021, Mayala caught 29 passes for 284 yards before signing with Montreal as a free agent in 2022.

Collegiately, Mayala played four seasons at Connecticut (2015-18) with 113 catches for 1,352 yards and 12 touchdowns in 43 games for the Huskies.

In addition to Mayala, the Alouettes signed former Ohio State wide receiver Austin Mack, and former Northern Illinois defensive back Jalen Embry, and announced the retirement of defensive back Treshaun Abrahams.

Austin Mack is six foot two and weighs 215 pounds. The 25-year-old from Fort Wayne, Indiana, signed with the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2020. He caught seven passes for 91 yards in five games for the Giants. He later spent time with the Tennessee Titans and San Francisco 49ers.

Collegiately, Mack played four seasons at Ohio State (2016-19) with 79 catches for 1,050 yards, and six touchdowns in 43 games, of which 27 were starts for the Buckeyes.

Ja’Len Embry is five foot ten and weighs 195 pounds. The 29-year-old from Detroit, Michigan, had signed with the Raiders Tirol (ELF) in 2023. In 2022, he played for the Frankfurt Galaxy (ELF) with 44 tackles (34 solo, 10 assists), 2.5 tackles for loss, four interceptions for 57 yards, and nine pass breakups in 11 games.

Embry received a tryout for the Houston Texans in 2019 but was not signed. In addition, he played for the Aviators (TSL) for two seasons and later played one game for the New Orleans Breakers (USFL) but was released.

Collegiately, Embry redshirted at Iowa in 2014. Then, he transferred to Iowa Central Community College in 2015 with 49 tackles (26 solo, 23 assists), one interception for 30 yards, seven pass breakups, and one blocked kick in ten games for the Tritons.

After that, he transferred to Northern Illinois (2017-18) with 88 tackles (65 solo, 23 assists), 6.5 tackles for loss, 11 pass breakups, three kick returns for 61 yards, and six punt returns for four yards in 24 games for the Huskies.

Treshaun Abrahams is five foot eleven and weighs 196 pounds. The 26-year-old from Ajax, Ontario, spent the 2022 season on Montreal’s practice squad. Before Montreal, he played 13 games for the Redblacks in 2021. The Redblacks drafted Webster in the fifth round (38th pick) in the 2020 CFL Draft from Calgary.

Webster played four seasons at Calgary (2016-19) with 67 tackles (62 solo, 14 assists), five tackles for loss, one interception, 17 pass breakups, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and one blocked kick in 38 games for the Dinos.
