B.C. Lions sign five players from the 2023 CFL Draft

The B.C. Lions signed defensive back Jassin States-McClean, offensive lineman Troy Kowal, linebackers Markcus Jean-Loescher and Jack Hinsperger, and defensive lineman Francis Bemiy on Monday.

Jassin States-McClean is six foot two and weighs 180 pounds. The 22-year-old from Halifax, Nova Scotia, was drafted in the sixth round (52nd pick) in the 2023 Draft.

Collegiately, he played three seasons at St. Mary’s University (2019, 2021-22) with 49.5 tackles (39 solo, 21 assists), one interception, and eight pass breakups in 21 games for the Huskies. States-McClean played in the 2022 East-West Bowl.

Troy Kowal is six foot six and weighs 295 pounds. The 24-year-old from High River, Alberta, was selected in the eighth round (70th pick) of the 2023 CFL Draft. Collegiately, Kowal played 29 games at tackle in four seasons at Minot State (2018-19, 2021-22). In addition, Kowal made three solo tackles.

Markcus Jean-Loescher is six foot two and weighs 225 pounds. The 23-year-old from Toronto, Ontario, was taken in the fourth round (34th pick) of the 2023 CFL Draft.

Collegiately, Jean-Loescher played three seasons at St. Mary’s University (2019, 2021-22) with 68 tackles (57 solo, 22 assists), six tackles for loss, two sacks, one forced fumble, and three pass breakups in 18 games for the Huskies.

Jack Hinsperger is six foot and weighs 212 pounds. The 24-year-old from Waterloo, Ontario, was drafted in the seventh round (61st pick) of the 2023 CFL Draft.

Collegiately, Hinsperger played three seasons at Waterloo (2018, 2021-22) with 113 tackles (88 solo, 25 assists), 12 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, one interception for 17 yards, one pass breakup, one fumble recovery, and one kick return for 18 yards in 20 games for the Warriors. He was named OUA First-Team All-Star in 2022.

Francis Bemiy is six foot four and weighs 270 pounds. The 24-year-old from Montreal, Quebec, was selected in the first round (9th pick) in the 2023 CFL Draft.

Collegiately, Bemiy played five seasons at Southern Utah (2018-22) with 163 tackles (87 solo, 76 assists), 38.5 tackles for loss, 13 sacks, one pass breakup, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and one blocked kick in 49 games for the Thunderbirds.

He was named Bluebloods First Team All-Conference honors and was an All-Big Sky First Team Defensive selection in the Spring of 2021.
