Hamilton Tiger-Cats sign draft pick linebacker Penei Pavihi

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats signed linebacker Penei Pavihi on Thursday. Penei Pavihi is six foot three and weighs 245 pounds. The 23-year-old from Tafuna, American Samoa, was selected in the first round (4th pick) in the 2023 CFL Global Draft.

Collegiately, Pavihi played five seasons at the University of Hawaii (2017-22) with 233 tackles (132 solo, 101 assists), 20 tackles for loss, six sacks, two interceptions for 52 yards, one touchdown, one forced fumble, and three fumble recoveries in 60 games for the Rainbow Warriors. In his final season, Pavihi made 78 tackles (47 solo, 31 assists), five tackles for loss, two sacks, one interception for 50 yards, and two pass breakups in 13 games.

The Ticats also announced they released wide receiver Brennan Eagles. Brennan Eagles is six foot four and weighs 229 pounds. He signed with the Ticats in March after spending the 2022 season on the Philadelphia Stars practice squad. Philadelphia drafted Eagles in the 15th round (120th pick) in the 2022 USFL Draft.

Before Philadelphia, Eagles signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2021. He played two preseason games with one catch for 25 yards. Shortly after being released by the Cowboys, Eagles had a tryout for the Green Bay Packers.

Collegiately, Eagles played three seasons at the University of Texas (2018-20) with 61 catches for 1,026 yards and 11 touchdowns in 32 games for the Longhorns.

In his final season, Eagles made 28 catches for 469 yards, and five touchdowns in nine games in 2020. He earned an honorable mention All-Big 12 as a wide receiver in 2020 and a Preseason All-Big 12 Second Team selection by Athlon Sports in 2020.
