The Memphis Showboats (2-3) visited Protective Stadium on Sunday afternoon to close out week five of the USFL season against the undefeated New Orleans Breakers (4-1). Coming into this game, the Breakers were a 7.5 favorite.
Memphis quarterback Cole Kelley completed 24 of 36 passes (66.7%) for 224 yards, one touchdown, one interception, five carries for four yards, and converted a two-point play as the Showboats ended the Breakers’ undefeated streak by the final score of 17-14.
Memphis running back Kerrith Whyte led the rushers with 14 carries for 29 yards, and three catches for 14 yards, while tight end Jay Jay Wilson led the receivers with five catches for 64 yards, and tight end John Mitchell caught one pass for four yards, and one touchdown.
Memphis’s defense allowed 232 yards, with 65 tackles, one tackle for loss, four sacks, one interception, four pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.
New Orleans quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson completed 25 of 35 passes (71.4%) for 206 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Running back Wes Hills had 14 carries for 38 yards, seven catches for 46 yards, while Anthony Jones had one carry for two yards, and one catch for four yards, and one touchdown.
Wide receiver Jonathan Adams led the receivers with four catches for 51 yards. New Orleans’s defense allowed 244 yards, with 66 tackles, six tackles for loss, two sacks, one interception, four pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.
Next Saturday, the Memphis Showboats host the Pittsburgh Maulers at 12:30 pm on USA Network, while the New Orleans Breakers visit the Philadelphia Stars on Sunday at 12 pm on FS1.
