The Toronto Argonauts made several moves on Wednesday including signing former Western wide receiver Savaughn Magnaye-Jones.
In addition, they placed defensive back Cody Hale on the suspended list, while releasing running back Adam Cofield, fullback Joe Carbone, wide receivers Will Vereen and Cyrus Holder, offensive lineman Daviyon McDaniel, defensive lineman Chris Rice, linebacker Chris Moore, defensive backs Parnell Motley and Devin Hafford, and long snapper Max Latour.
Savaughn Magnaye-Jones is five foot nine and weighs 160 pounds. The 24-year-old from Hamilton, Ontario, caught 33 passes for 579 yards, nine touchdowns, one carry for 11 yards, and 11 kick returns for 265 yards in eight games for the Mustangs in 2022.
Magnaye-Jones played three seasons at Western (2018-19, 2022) with 52 catches for 917 yards, 11 touchdowns, one carry for 11 yards, and 11 kick returns for 265 yards in 20 games.
Cody Hale is six foot three and weighs 208 pounds. The 24-year-old from Oakville, Ontario, made 28 tackles (22 solo, 12 assists), one tackle for loss, one interception, and five pass breakups in nine games for the Varsity Blues.
Hale played four seasons at the University of Toronto (2018-19, 2021-22) with 62 tackles (50 solo, 24 assists), two tackles for loss, two interceptions for 49 yards, two touchdowns, six pass breakups, and two fumble recoveries in 30 games.
Adam Cofield is five foot eleven and weighs 215 pounds. The 25-year-old from Lee’s Summit, Missouri, was on Toronto’s practice squad in 2022. Collegiately, Cofield played four seasons at North Dakota State (2017-20) with 300 carries for 1,542 yards, 19 touchdowns, 19 catches for 109 yards, one touchdown, and one kick return for 13 yards in 38 games for the Bisons. He was a 2019 All-MVFC Honorable Mention.
Then, Cofield transferred to Western Kentucky in 2021 with 14 carries for 81 yards, four touchdowns, and 22 catches for 176 yards in 14 games for the Hilltoppers. He is the son of three-time CFL All-Star Tim Cofield, who won a Grey Cup with Toronto in 1996.
Joe Carbone is six foot four and weighs 225 pounds. The 25-year-old from Ridgeway, Ontario, played four games for the Argonauts in 2022. Collegiately, Carbone played four seasons at Mercyhurst University (2016-19) with ten catches for 80 yards and one tackle in 25 games for the Lakers.
Will Vereen is five foot eleven and weighs 200 pounds. The 24-year-old from Little River, South Carolina, signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent in 2022.
Collegiately, Vereen played four seasons at South Carolina State (2018-21) with 80 catches for 1,081 yards, six touchdowns, and five kick returns for 89 yards in 30 games, of which 20 were starts for the Bulldogs.
Cyrus Holder is six foot four and weighs 205 pounds. Holder signed with the Argonauts on September 29th, 2022, and was placed on the practice squad for the remainder of the season.
The 26-year-old from Uniondale, New York, was recently with the Vegas Vipers (XFL) after the Vipers drafted him in the fourth round (28th pick) in the 2023 XFL Supplemental Draft. Before the Vipers, Holder signed with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent but was released a week later.
Collegiately, Holder played three seasons at St. Francis University (2016-18) with 62 catches for 1,150 yards, nine touchdowns, and one kick return for 13 yards in 25 games for the Red Flash. He was selected to Phil Steele’s Preseason Third Team All-NEC in 2018. He caught 47 passes for 692 yards, five touchdowns, and one kick return for 13 yards in ten games.
Afterward, Holder transferred to Duquesne (2020-21) with 60 catches for 1,120 yards, and 13 touchdowns in 15 games for the Dukes. In his first season with the Dukes, Holder caught 23 passes for 491 yards and five touchdowns in five games.
In addition, he was named NEC Offensive Player of the Week in the Spring 2021 season when he caught seven passes for a career-high 211 yards, and two touchdowns in a win against Long Island University.
In his final season with the Dukes, Holder caught 37 passes for 629 yards and eight touchdowns in ten games. He is a two-time First Team All-NEC.
Daviyon McDaniel is six foot three and weighs 300 pounds. The 24-year-old from Sumter, South Carolina, started seven games for UNLV in 2022. He played 21 games in two seasons at both left tackle and right tackle at UNLV (2021-22).
Before UNLV, McDaniel played 19 games in three seasons at Charleston Southern (2019-21). He was named Big South Postseason All-Conference First Team selection in 2021.
Chris Rice is six foot five and weighs 245 pounds. The 23-year-old from Bethel, Connecticut, attended the Tennessee Titans rookie minicamp in 2022.
Collegiately, Rice played four seasons at Castleton University (2017-2021) with 228 tackles, 69 tackles of loss, 26.5 sacks, two interceptions for 108 yards, one touchdown, seven pass breakups, eight forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, four blocked kicks, and one catch for 15 yards in 39 games for the Spartans.
In his final season, Rice had 65 tackles, 23 tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks, three pass breakups, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and one blocked kick in ten games.
He holds the Castleton record for sacks in a single game (3), season sacks (11.5), career sacks, (26.5), season tackles for loss (23), and career tackles for loss (69). He finished second in the nation in tackles for a loss in 2021.
He was named to the D-3.com All-Region Team in 2021 and a two-time Eastern Collegiate Football Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year (2019, 2021).
Chris Moore is six foot and weighs 210 pounds. The 24-year-old from Ashburn, Virginia, had a short stint with the Baltimore Ravens. He signed with the Ravens as an undrafted free agent.
Collegiately, Moore played three seasons at the University of Virginia (2016-17, 2019) with 97 tackles and one interception in 32 games. He missed the 2018 season due to an injury. Then, Moore transferred to Georgia State (2020-21) with 104 tackles, one interception, six pass breakups, and two forced fumbles in 22 games.
Parnell Motley is six foot and weighs 180 pounds. The 25-year-old from Washington, D.C., was drafted by the D.C. Defenders in the 12th round (4th pick) in the 2022 XFL Draft. After getting cut by the Defenders, he signed with the New Orleans Breakers on April 19th but was released the next day.
Motley signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent in 2020. He played two regular season games with eight tackles, one pass breakup, and one fumble recovery before being released. In addition, he had brief stints with the San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, and the Calgary Stampeders.
Collegiately, Motley played four seasons at Oklahoma (2016-19) with 176 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, six interceptions for 94 yards, one touchdown, 39 pass breakups, six forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries in 53 games for the Sooners.
In his final season, Motley made 41 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, one interception, 14 pass breakups, five forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery in 14 games. He was named First Team All-Big 12 by the media and Second Team by the coaches.
Devin Hafford is five foot eleven and weighs 205 pounds. The 25-year-old from Atascocita, Texas, had two stints with the New England Patriots in 2022.
He signed with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent. In addition, he spent time with the Pittsburgh Maulers (USFL) and was drafted by the Houston Roughnecks (XFL) before being released during training camp.
Collegiately, Hafford played six seasons at Tarleton State (2016-21) with 243 tackles, 12 interceptions, two touchdowns, 57 pass breakups, one forced fumble, four fumble recoveries, and one blocked kick in 56 games for the Texans.
In his final season, Hafford made 50 tackles, six interceptions, one touchdown, 13 pass breakups, and two fumble recoveries in 11 games. He was named WAC Defensive Player of the Year, AP FCS All-America Second Team, 2021 Stats Perform FCS All-America Second Team, First Team All-WAC, and Phil Steele FCS All-WAC First Team.
In addition, he was named D2CCA second-team All-American, Associated Press second-team All-American, D2CCA first-team All-Region, LSC Defensive Back of the Year, and First team All-LSC in 2018 after making 34 tackles, four interceptions, one touchdown, 18 pass breakups, and one blocked kick in 13 games.
Max Latour is six foot four and weighs 250 pounds. The 30-year-old from Valleyfield, Quebec played 11 games for the Argonauts in 2022, helping them win the 109th Grey Cup. In 2021, Latour played six games in Toronto, including the 2021 Eastern Final against Hamilton.
In addition, Latour spent time with the Ottawa Redblacks and played three games for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2019.
