Ottawa Redblacks sign former UTEP defensive back Ty’Reke James

The Ottawa Redblacks signed former UTEP defensive back Ty’Reke James on Thursday. Ty’Reke James is five foot eleven and weighs 199 pounds. To make room for James, Ottawa released defensive back Darius Williams.

The 24-year-old from Richmond, California, made 52 tackles (23 solo, 29 assists), one interception, and one kick return for six yards in 12 games for the Miners in 2022. James played five seasons at UTEP (2019-22) with 84 tackles (42 solo, 42 assists), one interception, and one kick return for six yards in 34 games, of which 14 were starts.

Before UTEP, James played at Whittier in 2017 with 11 tackles (7 solo, 4 assists) and one kick return for 17 yards in seven games. Then, he transferred to Contra Costa College in 2018 with 30 tackles (20 solo, 10 assists), one interception for two yards, three catches for 84 yards, two carries for seven yards, one touchdown, three kick returns for 61 yards, and four punt returns for 85 yards in ten games for the Comets.

Darius Williams is five foot ten and weighs 195 pounds. The 24-year-old from St. Petersburg, Florida, signed with the Redblacks in October 2022 and was placed on the practice squad. Before Ottawa, Williams had nine tackles, five tackles on special teams, and two interceptions in ten games for the Alouettes in 2022. Montreal released Williams on September 20th.

In 2021, Williams played 14 games for the Edmonton Elks with 30 tackles, six special teams tackles, and one forced fumble.

Collegiately, Williams played four seasons at Carson-Newman University (2016-19) with 179 tackles, one sack, two forced fumbles, nine pass breakups, and eight interceptions.
