The Philadelphia Stars placed defensive back Mazzi Wilkins on the injured reserve list and released offensive lineman Colby Ragland on Thursday.
Mazzi Wilkins is six foot and weighs 191 pounds. The 27-year-old from Tampa, Florida, played five games for the Stars this year with 13 tackles (11 solo, 2 assists), two tackles for loss, one sack, one pass breakup, and one interception for five yards. This is Wilkins’s second season with the Stars. Philadelphia drafted him in the tenth round (74th pick) in the 2022 USFL Draft.
In his first season with Philadelphia, Wilkins made 27 tackles (16 solo, 11 assists), two tackles for loss, and four pass breakups in ten games. Before Philadelphia, Wilkins was on the practice squads of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Washington Football Team, and Baltimore Ravens. Wilkins played for the Alphas in the TSL in 2021. In the NFL, Wilkins played five games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2019 with three tackles.
Collegiately, Wilkins played four seasons at South Florida (2015-18) with 110 tackles (78 solo, 32 assists), two tackles for loss, a half sack, three interceptions for 21 yards, 22 pass blocks, and one fumble recovery in 47 games for the Bulls.
Colby Ragland is six foot five and weighs 315 pounds. The 25-year-old from Jackson, Mississippi, played three games for Philadelphia in 2023. The Stars signed him as a free agent in May 2022. Ragland played the final three games of the 2022 season playing left guard.
Before Philadelphia, played 13 games for the University of Birmingham-Alabama at both left guard and right tackle in 2021, helping the Blazers’ running backs rush for 2,737 yards on the season. In his final season, the Blazers beat BYU in the Independence Bowl 31-28. He was named to the 2021 First Team All-Conference USA.
In addition, he helped the Blazers’ running backs rush for 1,800 yards (200 yards per game) and allowed four sacks in 2020. He was named to the 2020 First Team All-Conference USA. Ragland spent three seasons with the Blazers (2018-21), playing 37 games.
Before joining the Blazers, Ragland played at Jones County Junior College in 2017 as a defensive lineman before switching to left tackle. The Bobcats finished the season 8-2 but lost to East Mississippi in the MACCC Playoffs 24-20. He was named to the All-MACJC South Second Team.
