Stefan Wilson is out of the 107th Indianapolis 500 with a back injury

Stefan Wilson and Katherine Legge involved in a crash in Monday's practice from IMS

Dreyer & Reinbold Racing/Cusick Motorsports driver Stefan Wilson will miss Sunday’s 107th Indianapolis 500 due to a back injury sustained at Monday’s afternoon practice in a two-car accident with Katherine Legge at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The incident took place at 2:11 pm when Wilson reacted to a couple of cars slowing down at the entrance of turn one and Legge, at full speed, hit Wilson from behind and the two cars crashed before hitting the SAFER Barrier at turn one. Legge’s car continued down the track before hitting another SAFER Barrier in turn two.

Legge climbed out of the car without assistance and was evaluated and released from the IU Health Emergency Medical Center at the track. Meanwhile, Wilson had to be helped out of his car before being transported to the IU Health Methodist Hospital. Wilson did give a thumbs up as he was loaded into the ambulance. From there, the team released a statement on Wilson’s condition.

“After being transported to IU Hospital Methodist Hospital for further tests, it was disclosed that Wilson suffered a fracture of the 12th thoracic vertebrae and will remain overnight at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for further tests and observation.”

“Based on this type of injury, Wilson will not be allowed to compete in this Sunday’s 107th Indianapolis 500 Mile race. The Dreyer & Reinbold Racing/Cusick Motorsports team will have more information in due course.”

Wilson qualified 25th for the Indy 500 with a four-lap time of 2:35.4083 seconds at 231.648 mph.
