Calgary Stampeders sign two players including DB Tae Daley

The Calgary Stampeders signed former Virginia Tech defensive back Tae Daley and Toledo defensive lineman Jamal Hines on Friday. To make room for them, Calgary released defensive linemen George Obinna and Andrew Seinet-Spaulding.

Tae Daley is five foot eleven and weighs 201 pounds. The 24-year-old from Miami, Florida, signed with the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent in 2022 and played three pre-season games making 13 tackles.

Collegiately, Daley played three seasons at Vanderbilt (2017-19) with 108 tackles (74 solo, 34 assists), 5.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, three interceptions, three pass breakups, and one forced fumble in 35 games for the Commodores.

Then, Daley transferred to Virginia Tech in 2021 with 73 tackles (47 solo, 26 assists), four tackles for loss, one interception, seven pass breakups, and one forced fumble in 13 games for the Hokies, of which ten were starts. He was invited to the 2022 Tropical Bowl.

Jamal Hines is six foot three and weighs 250 pounds. The 25-year-old from Cincinnati, Ohio, was named pre-season First-Team All-MAC by Athlon after making 59 tackles (23 solo, 36 assists), ten tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, six pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery in 14 games for the Rockets in 2022.

Hines played five seasons at Toledo (2018-22) with 273 tackles (123 solo, 150 assists), 47 tackles for loss, 22 sacks, three interceptions for 24 yards, one touchdown, 19 pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries in 56 games. He was named First Team All-MAC in 2021, Second Team All-MAC in 2020, and Third Team All-MAC in 2019.

George Obinna is six foot two and weighs 251 pounds. The 26-year-old from Tracy, California, played two games for the Stampeders in 2022 with two tackles. He signed with Calgary as a free agent in 2022. Before Calgary, he was on the Atlanta Falcons practice squad in 2021.

Collegiately, Obinna played six seasons at Sacramento State (2014-19) with 136 tackles (70 solo, 66 assists), 47 tackles for loss, 33.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries in 48 games for the Hornets. He is a two-time First Team All-Big Sky (2017, 2019), and earned the team’s Ray Clemons Defensive MVP award in 2019.

Andrew Seinet-Spaulding is six foot and weighs 280 pounds. The 26-year-old from Pierrefonds, Quebec, made five tackles and one sack in five games for the Stampeders in the 2021 season but missed the 2022 season with an injury. Calgary drafted Seinet-Spaulding in the sixth round (52nd pick) in the 2020 CFL Draft.

Collegiately, Seinet-Spaulding played four seasons at McGill University (2016-19) with 63.5 tackles (46 solo, 23 assists), 20.5 tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries in 19 games for the Redbirds.

He became the third McGill football player in school history to win the prestigious J.P. Metras Trophy as the most outstanding down lineman in the country in 2019. In addition, he was a unanimous selection on the RSEQ All-Star Team and merited All-Canadian First Team in 2019.
