The New Orleans Breakers (6-3) visited Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium on Saturday afternoon against the Memphis Showboats (5-4) in a battle for second place.
Coming into this game, the Showboats were riding a five-game winning streak, while New Orleans were looking for their second straight win. Not only did New Orleans get their second win, they did it in a dominant fashion.
However, the game almost made it through the first quarter but Mother Nature had other plans. The game was delayed for three hours due to lightning in the area.
New Orleans quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson completed 9 of 16 passes (56.2%) for 88 yards, one touchdown, and four carries for four yards in a Breakers 31-3 win over the Showboats.
Running back Wes Hills led the rushers with 18 carries for 46 yards, one touchdown, and one catch for ten yards. Wide receiver Eli Stove had one carry for 29 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver Lee Morris led the receivers with three catches for 44 yards.
Kicker Matt Coghlin converted one field goal with a long of 43 yards and made four extra points. New Orleans’s defense allowed 249 yards, with 65 tackles, six tackles for loss, five sacks, three interceptions, eight pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and one touchdown.
Memphis quarterback Cole Kelley completed 23 of 41 passes (56.1%) for 224 yards, three interceptions, and three carries for 18 yards. Running back Juwan Washington led the rushers with 11 carries for 40 yards, while wide receiver Derrick Dillon led the receivers with five catches for 51 yards.
Memphis kicker Alex Kessman made one field goal for 50 yards. Memphis’s defense allowed 170 yards, with 67 tackles, six tackles for loss, four sacks, and two pass breakups.
Next Saturday, the Showboats close out the season against the Birmingham Stallions at 4 pm on FOX, while the New Orleans Breakers battle the Houston Gamblers on Sunday at 4 pm on FS1.
