Mark Winterbottom ends seven-year drought at the Betr Darwin Triple Crown

Mark Winterbottom wins his first race in seven years at Darwin on Saturday

The Repco Supercars Championship visited Hidden Valley Raceway in Darwin, Northern Territory, for Race 13 on Saturday in the Betr Darwin Triple Crown.

Monster Energy Racing driver Cam Waters started Race 13 on the pole. It was his first pole of the season and joining him on the front row was Red Bull Ampol Racing’s Broc Feeney.

Unfortunately for Waters, his day came to an abrupt end when his car caught on fire early in the race and led to a full course caution. He exited his car and walked away under his own power. Before the incident, Waters led four laps.

The rest of the teams were allowed to go to pit road for their compulsory stops. Mark Winterbottom emerged as the new leader when the race got back underway on lap 11. Broc Feeney challenged Winterbottom late in the race but Winterbottom held off Feeney by .456 seconds to win his first race in seven years. His last win came in 2016. In addition, it was the first victory for Schwerkolt’s team in 333 attempts.

The rest of the top ten finishers were Will Davison third, Brodie Kostecki fourth, Bryce Fullwood fifth, Shane Van Gisbergen sixth, Will Brown seventh, Chaz Mostert eighth, Anton De Pasquale ninth, and Tim Slade tenth.

The Repco Supercars Championship concludes the Betr Darwin Triple Crown on Sunday with races 14 and 15.
