Reading Royals finalizes three future consideration trades

The Reading Royals completed three future consideration trades on Tuesday. Tuesday was the deadline that all future consideration trades during last season needed to be finalized.

The Royals acquired forward John Schiavo from the Kansas City Mavericks, defenseman Darren Brady from the Idaho Steelheads, and traded defenseman T.J. Fergus to the Rapid City Rush.

John Schiavo is five foot ten and weighs 178 pounds. The 29-year-old from East Patchogue, New York, scored six goals and 11 assists (17 points), along with eight PIM in 43 games for the Mavericks last season. Schiavo comes over from the Jordan Timmons trade on February 28, 2023. Schiavo has played four ECHL seasons with the Kansas City Mavericks scoring 20 goals and 29 assists (49 points) along with 14 PIM in 119 games.

In addition, Schiavo played six SPHL seasons with the Macon Mayhem, Huntsville Havoc, Mississippi RiverKings, Fayetteville Marksmen, Pensacola Ice Flyers, Evansville Thunderbolts, and Quad City Storm scoring 55 goals and 83 assists (138 points), with 49 PIM. In the SPHL playoffs, Schiavo scored one goal and four assists (4 points) with two PIM in eight games. He is a member of the 2018-19 Huntsville Havoc championship team.

Darren Brady is six foot and weighs 183 pounds. The 27-year-old from Lake Orion, Michigan, split time last season with the Idaho Steelheads with three assists in 12 games, and the San Jose Barracuda with three goals and six assists (9 points), with 33 PIM in 50 games. Brady completes the future considerations trade that sent Zane Franklin to Idaho on October 30, 2022.

Collegiately, Brady played four seasons at Rochester Institute of Technology (2016-19) with ten goals and 26 assists (36 points), along with 52 PIM in 135 games for the Tigers.

After his collegiate career ended, he signed with the Macon Mayhem with two assists in eight games and played 36 games for the Rapid City Rush with two assists.

In the 2021-22 season, Brady split the season with the Idaho Steelheads, scoring seven and 25 assists (32 points), along with 31 PIM, and played two games for the Abbotsford Canucks.

T.J. Fergus is six foot and weighs 183 pounds. The 26-year-old from Oakville, Ontario, played three regular season games and six playoff games for the Royals last season. In addition, he suited up for the Iowa Heartlanders, Savannah Ghost Pirates, and Wheeling Nailers, scoring four goals and 16 assists (20 points), along with 6 PIM. Fergus completes the future considerations trade for Rapid City forward Alec Butcher on August 23, 2022.

Fergus played four seasons in the OHL with the Erie Otters, Hamilton Bulldogs, and Barrie Colts scoring 13 goals and 89 assists (102 points), 154 PIM, and played 57 OHL playoff games with one goal and 15 assists (16 points). He is a member of the 2016-17 Erie Otters OHL Championship team.

Then, Fergus went to Acadia University with three goals and seven assists (10 points), 74 PIM, and played seven playoff games recording no stats for the Axemen. After his collegiate career ended, he played seven games for the Florida Everblades with two assists.
