Ottawa Redblacks lose quarterback Tyrie Adams for the season

The Ottawa Redblacks received some bad news on Wednesday as quarterback Tyrie Adams is out for the remainder of the 2023 season with an ACL injury. Adams suffered the injury in last Friday’s game against the Edmonton Elks.

Tyrie Adams is six foot two and weighs 185 pounds. The 26-year-old from St. Petersburgh, Florida, completed 23 of 37 passes (62.2%) for 314 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and seven carries for 50 yards in three games, of which he started one last week against Edmonton.

The Redblacks signed Adams as a free agent in 2022. He completed 8 of 12 passes (66.7%) for 98 yards, and four carries for 31 yards.

Before Ottawa, Adams played for the Salina Liberty (CIF) for one season, completing 83 of 117 passes (71%) for 944 yards, 25 touchdowns, and three interceptions. He led the Liberty to a 13-2 record, and the team lost the CIF Championship game to the Omaha Beef by one point. Adams was hired as a running-backs coach for Dodge City Community College.

Collegiately, Adam played four seasons at Western Carolina (2016-19) completing 739 of 1,172 (63%) for 8,978 yards, 64 touchdowns, 32 interceptions, 594 carries for 2,547 yards, 18 touchdowns, and two catches for ten yards in 44 games for the Catamount.

Adams was Western Carolina’s all-time leader in career completions (739), pass attempts (1,172), passing yards (8,978), passing touchdowns (64), and total offense yards (11,525). He is a two-time Second Team All-Southern Conference, 2016 Southern Conference Freshman of the Year, and was selected to the SoCon All-Freshman team.

In addition to losing Adams, the Redblacks released defensive back Skyler Thomas. Skyler Thomas is five foot nine and weighs 185 pounds. The Redblacks signed Thomas as a free agent on April 25, 2023. Thomas was placed on the suspended list on May 14, 2023.

The 25-year-old from Riverside, California, signed with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent in 2022 but was released during training camp.

Collegiately, Thomas played four seasons at Washington State (2016-19) with 152 tackles (89 solo, 63 assisted), 3.5 tackles for loss, six interceptions for 90 yards, 11 pass breakups, and two fumble recoveries in 28 games for the Cougars.

In his final season at Washington State, Thomas had 72 tackles (41 solo, 31 assists), two tackles for loss, four interceptions for 72 yards, seven pass breakups, and two fumble recoveries in 28 games. In the 2019 Cheez-It Bowl, Thomas had six tackles, one interception, and one pass breakup against Air Force.

Then, Thomas transferred to Liberty in 2021 with 54 tackles (26 solo, 28 assists), four tackles for loss, two interceptions for 27 yards, one touchdown, three pass breakups, and one forced fumble in 13 games for the Flames.
