Hamilton quarterback Matthew Shiltz placed on the six-game injured list

Hamilton Tiger-Cats Head Coach Orlando Steinauer announced on Monday that Matthew Shiltz will be placed on the six-game injured as Taylor Powell will be the starting quarterback for this Friday’s game against the Toronto Argonauts according to TSN reporter Matthew Scianitti.

Scianitti goes on to say that quarterback Kai Locksley will be the backup to Powell while they will bring in an incoming quarterback that will be announced later this week. Bo Levi Mitchell remains out with an injury that he suffered in Week 2.

Matthew Shiltz’s injury happened late in the third quarter against the Edmonton Elks and Taylor Powell played the rest of the game. Shiltz completed 10 of 17 passes (59%) for 184 yards, two carries for ten yards, and one touchdown, and Taylor Powell completed 2 of 4 passes (50%) for 47 yards and one touchdown.

Taylor Powell is six foot two and weighs 207 pounds. The 24-year-old from Fayetteville, Arkansas, signed with the Ticats on May 17, 2023. Powell has played five games for the Ticats c completing 2 of 4 passes (50%) for 47 yards, one touchdown, and two carries for two yards.

Before Hamilton, he played one season at Eastern Michigan in 2022 completing 174 of 269 passes (65%) for 2,111 yards, 16 touchdowns, 8 interceptions, 44 carries for -98 yards, and two touchdowns in nine games for the Eagles.

Before Eastern Michigan, Powell played three seasons at Missouri (2017-19) completing 35 of 76 passes (46%) for 431 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions, and seven carries for one yard in 15 games for the Tigers.

Then, Powell transferred to Troy in 2021 completing 125 of 189 passes (66%) for 1,251 yards, 7 touchdowns, 6 interceptions, 19 carries for -95 yards, and one touchdown in six games for the Trojans.

Matthew Shiltz is six foot two and weighs 205 pounds. The 30-year-old from St. Charles, Illinois, completed 67 of 104 passes for (64.4%) for 880 yards, two touchdowns, three interceptions, 13 carries for 66 yards, and one touchdown in five games for the Ticats in 2023.

In 2022, he completed 85 of 119 passes (71.4%) for 935 yards, four touchdowns, two interceptions, 28 carries for 152 yards, and one touchdown in 17 games for the Ticats.

The Ticats signed Shiltz as a free agent on February 6th, 2022 after spending four seasons with the Montreal Alouettes. Shiltz completed 145 of 237 passes (61.2%) for 1,866 yards, eight touchdowns, 11 interceptions, 50 carries for 313 yards, and two touchdowns in 50 games for the Alouettes.

Collegiately, Shiltz played four seasons at Butler University (2012-15) with 324-552 completions for 4,042 yards, 29 touchdowns, 13 interceptions, 175 carries for 862 yards, two touchdowns, and caught four passes for 32 yards in 29 games for the Bulldogs.

In 2015, Shiltz was named 2015 First Team Academic All-PFL, 2015 PFL Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year, and 2015 All-PFL Second Team. He completed 218 of 381 passes (57.2%) for 2,713 yards, 19 touchdowns, nine interceptions, 126 carries for 639 yards, ten touchdowns, three catches for 36 yards, and two touchdowns in 11 games in his final season.
