Saskatchewan Roughriders name Mason Fine starting quarterback

On Sunday, the Saskatchewan Roughriders announced that Trevor Harris could miss the rest of the 2023 season with a fractured tibial plateau in his right knee. The injury occurred in the fourth quarter against the Calgary Stampeders last week.

Mason Fine came into the game and completed 6 of 8 passes (75%) for 116 yards, two touchdowns, and one carry for 24 yards. This will be Fine’s third career start in the CFL.

He finished his collegiate career as the all-time leading passer in program history (12,505 yards), first in passing touchdowns (93), first in passer efficiency (140.68), first in touchdowns responsible for (100), is the record-holder in career completions (1,039), career pass attempts (1,655), second in career completion percentage (62.8 percent), and has the most 300-yard passing games in program history (18).

He is a two-time C-USA Offensive Player of the Year (2017-18), two-time First Team All-CUSA (2017-18), Second Team All-CUSA (2019), and All-CUSA Freshmen Team (2016).

After North Texas, Fine signed with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent in 2020. After Chicago, Fine signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders on December 30, 2020. In 2021, he made his debut against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on November 20th, completing 5 of 9 passes (55.6%) for 64 yards.
