Former Reading Royals defenseman Will MacKinnon signed with the Utica Comets (AHL) on Thursday. He is the second Reading player to sign with the Comets. MacKinnon’s father Dan MacKinnon is the General Manager of the Utica Comets.
Will MacKinnon is five foot eleven and weighs 201 pounds. The 23-year-old from Plymouth, Michigan, earned 26 points (7 goals, 19 assists), and 63 penalty minutes in 71 games for the Royals last season. In addition, he collected two points (1 goal, 1 assist), and eight penalty minutes in 11 playoff games. MacKinnon signed with the Royals on March 14, 2022. He earned 27 points (7 goals, 20 assists), and 82 penalty minutes in 88 games in Reading.
Collegiately, MacKinnon played four seasons at the University of New Hampshire (2018-21) collecting 24 points (5 goals, 19 assists), and 64 penalty minutes in 119 games for the Wildcats. In his final season, he was the captain of the Wildcats, earning six points (1 goal, 5 assists), and 12 penalty minutes in 27 games.
In the USHL, MacKinnon played two seasons for the USNTDP Juniors and Des Moines Buccaneers with 11 points (3 goals, 8 assists), and 139 penalty minutes in 91 games. In addition, he played for the U.S. National U17 and U18 teams with four assists and 26 penalty minutes in 57 games.
